Please help. low compression.?

I have a 98 Ford Taurus.. been running rough. last owner put some sticker on the check engine light to avoid the blinking.. i bought it, though it was just a minor tune up, now i know that my first station wagon was low, on compression on 5. Im prepare change the head and seal... but in my mind could not picture my self changing the piston ring.. thats crazy .. how do you know for sure it your piston ring is gone...? you know? . in my mind, change head gasket and put new seal and so on, i know it will work.. I'll shoot my self if i find out that all the work i put in and pay for stuff (head gasket).. still to see my baby run the same, Mrs. Piston Ring..Please help me, how to tell if its bad. Please help. low compression.?
If you squirt some oil into the cylinder and then rerun the compression test if the compression rises it is an indication of bad rings. If it is not rings then it may either be the head gasket or a leaking valve. You should check the valves in that cylinder when you have the head off and replace only the bad one. If you do a complete valve job that is when you may have a problem with the other rings.

If it is rings if you do one you may as well do them all and while you have the pistons out you may as well replace the rod bearings and while the engine is open you may as well replace.....Please help. low compression.?
In my experience when you change the top of the engine it increases compression in the engine and wears the bottom end out quick. Replace the rings. Please help. low compression.?
A head gasket is not a fix for low compression. It's either bad rings or a burnt valve. To figure out what you've got, run compression dry and take the readings. then squirt some oil into the cylinder, 2 or 3 pumps from an oil can, if the reading rises considerably you have bad rings.

Next time you might take the car to a mechanic for an inspection before you buy it.Please help. low compression.?
if the head gasket is bad,it will use a lot of water..

if the rings are bad on one or all cylinders it will use oil..

if it doesn't pass smog, it usually a bad cat..

the light is usually on because of a plugged or comtaminated O2 sensor.. new sensors and cat should clear the light for a while..Please help. low compression.?
I would spend a little more money and rebuild the engine if the body and rest of the drive train is still good. Just applying a bandage would not be financially frugal. Please help. low compression.?
More likely it has bad engine valves,if piston rings, you would have bad blow by,shooting engine oil all over the place.Valve not seated is easy to see once you have the head off. Please help. low compression.?
bring it to a good repair shop they can use a bore scope and look inside the cly for a bad valve or try a cly leak down test see where the compression is going
