hi rusty...no offence but if you have to ask then you cant do it.its not just the cars of removing the head and sticking on another gasket...they just dont blow by them selves..head may be warped and requiring a skim...lots of other things have to be taken into consideration...

eg..do you have the correct tools?

can you set the engine to TDC on the comp stroke?

do you know what TDC is?

a advise sending it to a back street garage..i do them for about 拢40How to change a head gasket on a t reg 1998 vaxuhall astra?
If your asking this question then you don't know enough to be able to replace your head gasket as you need quite a bit of mechanical experience to do this job properly. Its not like changing a wheel as considerable care and knowledge is needed or you will get it wrong causing much more damage.

I Agree with above replace timing belt to and find an independent garage ( preferably by recommendation ) to do it for you. Also you may well need other gaskets. eg manifold, rocker, water housings. How to change a head gasket on a t reg 1998 vaxuhall astra?
The details are all there in the Haynes manual in Section 1 - Engine. Sounds like you'd be better taking it to a small independent repair garage who are prepared to fit customer supplied parts. Get a new timing belt as well. Cost? Depends on the garage. Grit your teeth for 拢200 inc VAT and be pleasantly surprised if it's cheaper, ring round for quotes. Avoid main dealers, they'll fleece you.How to change a head gasket on a t reg 1998 vaxuhall astra?
Sound advice from Lucky Ellie, you will need a full head gasket set and, if yours is the 16 valve, you will also need a cam aligning tool, you could fabricate one, but you do need good mechanical knowledge and be competent with a set of spanners. If you're not, best entrust it to a garage. How to change a head gasket on a t reg 1998 vaxuhall astra?
Buy the repair manual, you need the torque specifications, and order of procedure
