A/C / antifreeze leak in 97 silverado?

I went outside one day and there was fluid on my driveway. I looked under the hood and there was antifreeze coming from the A/C compressor!!!! And I then tried my A/C It did not work. The truck is not over heating. I have no clue how antifreeze would even get close to the a/c compressor. I changed the head gaskets about 2 years ago.A/C / antifreeze leak in 97 silverado?
The leak you are seeing is fre-on, not coolant. The greenish fluid is a/c compressor oil with leak detection dye. The compressor would need to be replaced and then recharged most likely.

  • How much does it cost to replace the engine in a Dodge Dart? (1966 with slant 6-cylinder)?

The car will not accelerate over 30MPH. The car often stalls when idling. The mechanic says the 3rd cylinder is dead. The air pressure was only 20PSI, when it should be 150PSI. He recommends a valve job where he will replace some things in the engine including the head gasket. He also changed the distributor rotor, wires, spark plugs. HE want to chare $1400 for everything. This seems expensive. Would it be cheaper just to replace the old engine. It is 42 years old now.How much does it cost to replace the engine in a Dodge Dart? (1966 with slant 6-cylinder)?
i own a repair shop and you can have the whole engine rebuilt cheaper than you can have him half way fix it,i think he,s going to half way fix it,so take it somewhere and have a good mechanic look it over im sure it needs work, i do this all the time, but don't let that mechanic touch it,for that kind of money you can have every single piece of that motor replaced and it will be like a new one, actually it will cost you less than that those are really simple to work on,good luck with it hope this helps. How much does it cost to replace the engine in a Dodge Dart? How much does it cost to replace the engine in a Dodge Dart? (1966 with slant 6-cylinder)?
I take it you want to keep the car as original as possible. Otherwise there isn't much reason to be driving a 66 Dart. The slant sixes are an easy engine to overhaul and with one dead cylinder that's what I'd do. What that mechanic is telling you is not what's best. A valve job on an old engine like that will lead to ring failure and oil burning and possibly bearing failure. You can probably buy a short block but then the engine serial No. will no longer match the car. Find a good repair shop that can overhaul the engine for you. You'll be happier and out less money in the long run.How much does it cost to replace the engine in a Dodge Dart? (1966 with slant 6-cylinder)?

You can get a V-8 that drops right in and is more reliable than the slant 6 for around $1000. not only will it give you an increase in power, but the overall feel of the car as well.

Heating problems with my 1999 subaru ouback.?

at around 160 000 miles the engine of the ouback 2.5 was overheating only on high speed. Now , at 200 000 miles all the time in hot wearther.Cooling water consumption, about 1 liter by 1000 miles, What can be ? I use fuel and gas, and a Subaru dealer told me that the gas brakes the heads..What is the best to do ? how much costs heads? changing the gaskets can be enough?

T Y.Heating problems with my 1999 subaru ouback.?
The head gaskets are very sensitive to a overheating condition. Subaru actually extended powertrain warranty time on theses vehicle for head gasket failure conditions. But unfortunatelty you are above the milage and time limit to qualify for the repairs. I've worked on a hand full of these vehicles and none of of them required cylinder head replacement. I just replaced the gaskets, flushed the block and radiator and the vehicles ran trouble free. In the event if you are not so lucky,at one time subaru offered rebuilt heads with exchange for yours. Price ranged from 450-650$ per head. They may still be avalible.

Good Luck!Heating problems with my 1999 subaru ouback.?
Nobody on this portal can tell you for sure....but you may be able to get away with just replacing the head gaskets. There are a lot of miles on this engine....

    Head gasket replacement...?

1999 Subaru Forester 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic

I took my car in for the coolant additive that is need every 40,000 miles to prevent head gasket failure and I was told that both head gaskets are leaking and so is the water pump and that I missed my scheduled additive. What I need to know it what do I need to get to change all of it. I know I need the head gaskets, bolts, head gasket sealant, water pump, water pump seal, water pump gasket sealer, and a timing belt. I know I need a few other seals(intake I think) but I don't know what they are called and if I should replace anything else while I have the engine broke down. What do I need to replace the head gaskets and water pump? Instead of paying $3000 to get it done, I'm doing it myself for $350-$400 since I know how.Head gasket replacement...?
The first thing would be to take out the heads and check on the cylinders liners if scratched by pistons by over heat.

As from there a list of parts could be made.

Also try to get a manuel such as Haynes or other.

Rover lost power fast then died and wont start?

i have a rover 25 i was on the motorway and it started losing power fast, i pulled over and it died and then i couldnt start it.

well i could start it but as soon as i let go of the throttle it dies again. it drove onto the tow truck.

i sent it to a garage and they think its the head gasket although i didnt think it was that as the usual symptoms weren't there

how much should a head gasket cost to change?Rover lost power fast then died and wont start?
It sounds like it ran out of gas.Since it starts then dies.Rover lost power fast then died and wont start?
Head gasket will cost a bit as it takes some time to do. While the head is off, assuming this is the problem. You might as well have the head checked for cracks and if the valves need to be redone. The garage should give you a written estimate for repairs before you authorize any work. In US dollars could be $600. what test has garage done? A compression test will confirm head gasket. Have electronics been tested To see if delivering correct spark to fire engine? When was fuel filter last changed? Has fuel pressure been tested? Could be weak fuel pump?Rover lost power fast then died and wont start?
If it were a head gasket it wouldn't start at all. Sound more like the fuel pump died. Have the fuel pressure checked before changing the head gasket.Rover lost power fast then died and wont start?
They should have done a compression test. If they haven't, ask them to do it. This will prove that the cylinder head needs to come off for inspection or not. If the compression figures for each cylinder are approximately equal there is nothing wrong with the gasket or head. It sounds more like a fuel supply problem to me. If you can possibly get a male friend or relative to accompany you when you enquire about the problem, do so. These bastards tend to fill women up with all sorts of bullshit I am sorry to say. Wear old clothes as they can smell money a mile off.Rover lost power fast then died and wont start?
reading the symptoms it sounds like a plugged fuel filter or a plugged catalytic converter. DO NOT let them replace the head gasket. That is not the problem. A head gasket on that rover is an arm and a leg and it won't solve your problem. Also get the fuel pressure tested because it could be a weak fuel pump.

How much does a head gasket cost for a 2006 chevy impala?

i bought my 2006 chevy impala in june of 2009.i let 3 mechanic check it out before i purchased it and nothing was wrong.i have a friend that said he shaved the heads and got a oil change and it cost 500 dollars. now he did this himself and he is no mechanic. then after all of this i paid him back. now i took my car to a real mechanic and he said that he could tell that nothing was done just by me popping the hood. so now im stuck with a friend that says he did something and a real mechanic saying he didn't and will come show him that he didn't. i just wanna know how much does it cost to do that? How much does a head gasket cost for a 2006 chevy impala?
$500 sounds like a fair price to do head gaskets on that car , i dont know how your %26quot;real mechanic%26quot; can tell just by liftin the hood that he didnt do anything if he didnt clean everything like a shop would it really wouldnt look like the heads where done but anyways not sure if I answered you question ir not but thats my 2 cents worhHow much does a head gasket cost for a 2006 chevy impala?
Are you referring to the work that your so called friend did or didn't do? First of all does your friend have a machine shop in his basement? The work that you describe would have to be done in a facility where the machines that turn or shave heads because of warpage have to be done in exact tolerances. If you pull your own heads it would probably cost about $100.00 to $150.00 a head. If the shop does all the work about two and a half times the cost I quoted you.How much does a head gasket cost for a 2006 chevy impala?
About $1300 is probably the best price you'll find to do both heads at a good shop. Anything less would probably be skipping steps. If your friend actually had the heads machined, they will look brand new. As, the machine shop will completely clean the heads before and after machining.

  • How do you take off the pulley below the fan? mechanics help?

How do u take off the pully below the fan with out the motor turning over because we was changing my head gasket and the timing chain came outta place on the bottom sprocket and know we have to take the whole front of the motor apart but all that pully wants to do is turn and we dont know how to get a good grip on it and break the bolt loose can anybody help me?

1983 Nissan 720 engine 2.4How do you take off the pulley below the fan? mechanics help?
Rapid Fire is correct about needing the puller (harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller) later, but seems to have missed the fact that you're still trying to get the bolt loose, which must be done first. The easiest way to do this is to take off any access cover you need to, and jam a screwdriver into the teeth of the flywheel/torque converter flex plate (where the starter engages) Wedge it in such a way that the engines crankshaft (the part the pulley is on in front), won't turn counterclockwise while turning the bolt in the middle of the pulley, until it comes loose.

One other thought though. Are you sure you need to take that stuff apart? Assuming you lined it up with top dead center before you started, I'd think you could just re-hook the chain, and proceed as before. Of course, if you have rotated the crankshaft in the meantime, trying to get the bolt off, it may be necessary now. Or maybe you could line up the timing marks again? I mean, the chain doesn't really care which teeth it's on. It's the relation between the gears that matters.

Sometimes, when faced with a situation like this, the best thing you can do is take a step back, take a deep breath, and take a few minutes to think about the alternatives. How do you take off the pulley below the fan? mechanics help?
You need to use a gear puller to get the pulley off. Most parts stores will lend or rent you one. When the pulley comes off you will notice a keyway cut into the shaft - Do not lose the little metall woodruff key that comes out with the pulley.

I need to buy a car less than $1700?

I have a 2001 vw passat 1.8T, it started really messing up at 135,000 miles and in 2 years I've spent fixing it about $2000. Because my uncle is a mechanic I ended up paying for the parts and not labor. Anyway the car isn't working now, it barely turns on at 176,000 miles. It needs another $1000 to fix... I want to buy another old/reliable car because passats ARE NOT reliable at all. I've changed the head gasket 3 times (once at the dealer) and it kept on leaking oil... what would you recommend for me to buy? camry (90-94), accord (90-94)? what else. How many miles did your good old dependable car last you? how much you think I should sell my passat for parts or for a mechanic to fix... Thank youI need to buy a car less than $1700?
It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota... First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car - for example here - carquotes.fateback.comI need to buy a car less than $1700?
Camrys 95+ are good too. Also, Corollas. We had a 91 Corolla, with like 319,000 miles on it, and sold it for $50 about 5 years ago. I see it still driving around town to this day. I know that it's the same one from the unique rust hole in the trunk, haha. Any Toyota would be where it's at.I need to buy a car less than $1700?
my uncle owns a 93 camry , now drove past 250,000miles , still running very strong. he had no problems with it . so what does that tell you ? 93-94 carmy are good . very dependable.

selling it will get you no more than $1500 . fixing cost the same pretty much , so is time to give it up

How do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?

I recently had to change the head gaskets on my 97 ford expedition and had to take the 2 heads to a shop to get repaired and checked for warps anyways I finished putting everything back together and now it wont start it is obviously a timing problem because when I put it back together the timing chains were taken off and put back not in their original position %26quot;my father actually put the chains on I did the rest%26quot; as he has more know how about timing but he put them on wrong my question is how do I go about finding the correct position to put the 2 timing chains as they are completely off time and I cant take it to a shop because im piss poor broke for now %26quot;damn economy%26quot; any help is appreciatedHow do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?
First off, like already mentioned, these engines ARE interference engines meaning that valves WILL touch pistons if valve timing is off. With that in mind, you better hope that you haven't damaged valves.

To time these engines correctly, yes there are specific tools that are dedicated for the purposes of holding the cams and cranks into position for this procedure. But in absence of those tools (which I'm assuming is the case), this would be best done with two people on hand. First turn the engine over to the point where cylinder 1 is at TDC (it will be marked on the timing cover). Next, you'll need to remove both valve covers, the crankshaft pulley (which requires use of a bolt-grip type puller which I'm sure you know already) and then finally the timing chain cover. Remove both timing chain tensioners and compress them CAREFULLY in a vise, using a tiny flat blade screwdriver to push on the lock tabs as you compress it. Finally, insert a paper clip into the holes to hold them into the released position when you remove them from the vise. Now remove both timing chains. The crankshaft sprocket should be set where the mark is on the 6 o'clock position. You will now fold one chain exactly in half. On a 4.6L engine, you will mark one link with some kind of paint that won't rub off easily. And then you will mark the other end link with the same paint. The procedure is identical for a 5.4L engine except, you will mark one link with paint on the one end, and you will mark the two links at the opposite end. You will now begin with the driver side bank of cylinders and install the chain with the painted mark on the one link oriented with the mark on the crankshaft's INNER sprocket (so that this mark is at the 6 o'clock position). You will now have an assistant CAREFULLY rotate the driver side cam to where the dot on the cam sprocket is at approximately the 1 o'clock position, using either an 18mm wrench on the sprocket bolt, or a pair of vise-grips on the cam itself if it has the one-piece pressed on style of sprocket. BE CAREFULL WHEN THIS IS DONE, AS THE CAM IS UNDER TENSION. Next, have the assistant install the other end of the chain with the painted mark lined up with the dot on the sprocket (two painted marks if it's the 5.4L engine). Make sure the chain maintains this orientation as you reinstall the timing chain tensioner and torque the two 10mm bolts. Now verify that the chain is in proper time and pull the paper clip out in order to apply tension to the chain. Now repeat this step with the passenger side bank, with the chain installed on the outer sprocket on the crankshaft, and with the dot on the cam sprocket at approximately the 10 or 11 o'clock position. Once installed, reinstall the crank sensor ring onto the crankshaft, and then the timing chain cover and crankshaft pulley. Before reinstalling the valve covers, turn the engine over by hand using an 18mm socket and johnson bar on the crank pulley bolt. This is to ensure you haven't damaged any valves. Reinstall the valve covers and start engine to check for leaks or other issues. Hope this helps. How do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?

My friend, I hope you haven't damaged the valves, if the chains are off then most likey you have. In order to time the motor, on a 5.4 you must have a timing chain tool kit that has the crankshaft holding tool and the camshaft timing tools, with out them you will never get it timed right, a 4.6 has copper colored links and with the the crank on top dead center and align the linksHow do I fix timing on a 97 expedition?

    98 taurus over heating... AGAIN!?

i did have the heads resurfaced when i changed the head gasket btw... how much would a shop charge me to diagnose the problem?98 taurus over heating... AGAIN!?
On many cars when you drain the water and then re-fill it,the thermostat hinders the free flow of water around the circuit and this creates an air pocket in the system.A quick trip around the block to warm it up opens the stat and clears the air pocket so that the water level in the radiator is lowered ; it has not leaked out ,just filled up the air pocket space so now you can fill it up. You say that you have changed the fan switch, are you sure that the fan is switched. When it overheats does the fan run at this time.98 taurus over heating... AGAIN!?
If it was time to replace all of those other items, the radiator should have been right along on that list as well.

If we're talking about the wonderful Ford 3.8L V6, anytime is really fine for that engine to blow a head gasket. It happens..its just a bad design...but we'll stay positive and hope it's not that.

If you're not getting any hot coolant through your heater core, you might want to check and see if the coolant is leaking from a heater hose when the heater is on, or maybe from the heater core itself.98 taurus over heating... AGAIN!?
since corrosion is present, there is a possibility the heater core is clogged. take both hoses off core, hook garden hose to inlet hole and flush out. could be water is not going tru core and therefore no circulation back to engine block. change thermostat98 taurus over heating... AGAIN!?
eliminate the fan switch and run it direct from a fuse to have continuous air flowing to the radiator that guarantees that its not the fan :)

  • Metal shavings on the dipstick?

I was told by the mechanic today that I have metal shavings in my oil. They were in the oil on the dipstick. Not the transmission fluid, it's the engine oil! What does this mean? I know it's bad, but how bad? It's not my fault, it's the mechanics. I took it in for a blown head gasket - it was pouring antifreeze, never overheated, I've been diligent with my oil changes at 2000 - 2500 miles, the engine had absolutely no problems until they changed my head gasket so they are definitely going to have to fix this and eat the costs, but I am just wondering what I am looking at possibly. Thrown rod maybe?Metal shavings on the dipstick?
There are many things that could have caused this. Before your head gasket was change water could have leaked into the cylinder and caused it to hydraulic bending a rod or a valve. The ticking noise you heard could be coming from the valve train which would have been affected by the head gasket change. You will probably be looking at a pulling the motor to find out what is causing this noise. Pedro says changing the oil filter is all you need to do WRONG. Do not drive this vehicle any more, have it towed to another garage if you don't like the last one. If the ticking is the valve train your fix should be inexpensive but if it drove it will cost you more. However with metal shavings in the oil I would say your problem is worse. If the tick high pitched it is from your valve train and the shavings could be valve seats or valve guides. If the tick was low pitched with a deep echo it is coming from the bottom end and could be bearings. Anyway don't drive this car any more it will only damage it more!

Driving it that short of distance from the shop after them fixing it and something goes wrong! Any good shop would realize they did something wrong and would fix it at no cost to you. If you have problems with this shop find another. You said about a warranty, any dealer of the same type of auto should honor it and would be glad to have your business.Metal shavings on the dipstick?
yeah your engine is totaled what ever they did it mad it worse your bearings are shot. if they did this then make em pay for itMetal shavings on the dipstick?
depends on the amount of shavings...you can have a magnet placed in your oil pan...if you threw a ros you'd know itMetal shavings on the dipstick?
metal shavings mean nothing..unless your engine is not working [overheating,,,banging noise,,etc] just change oil and filter and dont worry,,,nothing in a head gasget change that would cause shavings,,, it woul'nt cost more if u wait,,,just keep driving...Metal shavings on the dipstick?
it just sounds like when u blew the gasket that it could have also threw that rod and smashed against the block and shavin off the flakes into ur oil! so i would make them do it again and yes have them eat the cost!!!!Metal shavings on the dipstick?
Why do you thing they are responsible? They fixed what you told them too. Anytime you get water in the oil it is a good chance that the water will ruin the bearings which is what happened in your case.Metal shavings on the dipstick?
youve got definate bearing wear.... a crank kit at the very least....sounds like the head gasket allowed water to the crankcase at time of failure,,,,water and coolant are NOT good lubricants for bearings..Metal shavings on the dipstick?
changing a head gasket wouldnt do that. if the noise is low, then its probably a rod bearing ready to go. if you threw a rod, it would be louder then a tick.now dear, this is just a guess, you can run this by your husband and see what he thinks. what about when they were cleaning the block and heads, some of the steel got into the oil drain holes and went into the oil pan, if it did then maybe the bearings picked up some of them. thats just a guess, i could be wrong.

Definitely could be the Cat, it will create excessive back pressure and blow the head gasket. Also make sure the timing is exact and that the firing order is 18436572.

Peugeot 206 handbrake and oil light flickering?

    hi

i have a 2000 Peugeot 206 1.4 and a week ago i had my timing belt and head gasket changed because i had an oil leak. i don't no if its related but the handbrake light, oil light and stop light is flickering at me when stopping in traffic and like usual i have the handbrake light lit i have my handbrake on.

as soon as i start to move off or rev the car a little the lights stop flickering and everything is normal. i hear no unusual noise and i haven't realised any difference in the car.

i also changed the oil pressure switch which hasn't helped.

i checked all my oils and they are all find and also the car came out of mechanics and i was there when he checked and topped up all the oils and liquids etc etc.

does anyone one why its flickering please help and someone also told me to increase the idle and it will fix the problem how do i do that and what is idle.Peugeot 206 handbrake and oil light flickering?
you need a new oil pressure switch, approx æ‹¢5 and 15 minuets to fit onePeugeot 206 handbrake and oil light flickering?
You MIGHT have a sticking oil presure relief valve, or your idle is too low. The oil pressure relief valve is a part of your oil pump. In other words, if your relief valve is mucked up with sludgy oil, it cannot do it's job, which is to regulate oil pressure when the engine is cold or idling slow. If your engine is fule injected, have your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE cleaned out with gum-out spray or equivalent. Check your PCV hose for signs of collapsing. IF you have been using regular oils, STOP DOING THIS. Regular oil is the usual cause for oil leaks and sticking pressure valves. START using Mobil One or ELF oil , or at least German Castrol!!! If your engine is idling too slow, it will trigger the oil pressure light no matter how often you change the sensor. Perhaps your technician has used the wrong weight or manufacture of oil for your car. START by having your throttle body and idle air control valve cleaned out. Power wash your engine so things stay clean and easy to see! It is also possible that your voltage regulator is acting up due to low engine speed, or bad carbon brushes that need replacing.Peugeot 206 handbrake and oil light flickering?
Told you before, mate, the brake warning system and the oil pressure warning system are entirely separate. The only thing they have in common is that they both have warning lights. You have an electrical problem.

Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?

head gasket changed. only valve cover, push rods and rocker arms, and both intake and exhaust manifolds attached to head were taken off. how could that throw off my timing? or make the air fuel mixture too lean? i'm trying to understand the problem. i let car run about 5 min. without the exhaust and manifold didn't turn red. hoping it's clogged or something simple and easy to fix. i replaced the vacuum pipe from manifold to head because of cracks, holes, and leaks. is it possible that the engine got use to running at high idle due to leaks. how do i diagnose and determine my problem on my own without technology the old way. and can a catalytic converter be unclogged? if my temp guage stop working colud that be the blame for the golw? help me with this glowing manifold and pipe issue somebody please... the shop is not an option, ya heard me...Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?
Didn't you ask this question earlier? Look, this is not going to be a shade tree answer off the internet fix. You are dumping raw fuel into the exhaust and most likely it has clogged your catalytic converter. But by just replacing the converter most likely it will happen again. I mean a shop with diagnostic equipment can diagnose the problem for an hours labor. What type of car and what size engine? Converter could be clogged but if it was the engine wouldn't run very long and not very well. If the mixture is off, the unburnt fuel will be burning in the exhaust causing it to glow. Is the engine skipping? How do the plugs look? If they are black, rich, if they are very white running lean.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?
Have you tried looping your heater core hose and flushing your engine ? If you have a plug somewhere, then not surprising.

You haven't said if your engine otherwise runs fine. Timing chains can jump on start up. This would affect both heads/exhaust.

Another possibility is lifters are sticking. Do you have solid or hydraulic lifters ? Have you ran the engine with your valve cover off and watched to make sure everything seems to be working fine on top ? Getting oil, lifters/rockers working normal, etc.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?

Okay, my answers are deceptively simple, but that's the best place to start... Take off the catalytic converter, run it straight pipe, and assign two other people to help you inspect the entire line. you want to diagnose *where* the heat up starts out. Pull or swap out the parts in a systematic order as you go down the line, and see how long, or how mush stress, the engine runs before the line goes cherry. If the heat source begins in the manifold, then your repair job is to blame. If it's down the line, you're looking at a plugged line or converter. Catalytic converters can be cleaned out, but you'd have to know what you are doing to a tee, or be willing to pay for someone who does, as a damaged converter is exponentially more dangerous than a blown head. Another contender is a dud sensor, or emissions control system. Are you sure the head you replaced is a sound one? Sometimes duds come in %26quot;new%26quot; or %26quot;reconditioned%26quot; packages. Don't know if you are talking about fuel injection or a carborator system. The fuel injection cleaners that are sold over the counter are crap that does more harm than good. Ask a reputable auto shop or mechanic about who they buy their f.i. cleaners from. A blown temp gage is a bad sign, but more symptom than cause in a heat up that does not involve your coolant system. Speaking of which, I hope you are running half antifreeze and half water in the radiator, and please check to be sure... A pure water or pure antifreeze fill *will* blow the plugs on your engine block, while too little or no water/coolant will over-heat and lock up your engine. In closing, two rare but plausible sources of grief are contaminants introduced into the pistons, arms, or manifold during repairs. Be especially wary of something as simple as water in this case, as this can cause all kinds of hell , including engine over-heat or seizing. There's always some dummy who poured the wrong fluids in the wrong tubes. I've got a buddy who chronically pours engine oil in either the power steering box, the master cylinder, or a more common goof, the transmission tube. Engines hate that, and I'd like to seize his driver's license just to protect the general public from him. All of these scenarios cause engines to cherry, hope you can find the fault inexpensively.

  • How do u know when ur turbo is messed up?

my 97 eclipse gst recently started to throw alot of white smoke out of the exhaust could this b because of my turbo burning oil or could it be something else......i dont know if this helps but had the head gasket changed like last month could the turbo be bad or did the shop not install the head gasket correctly causing my car to burn something???...thanx for the helpHow do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
Turbo no go?How do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
The head gasket is blown. The smoke is partially burned antifreeze. Looks the shop did it wrong. How do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
the turbo won't really cause the problem.%26gt; Turbo's either work, or they don't. I don't think you head gasket is the issue either unless its leaking..

white smoke can come from bad plugs, seals, oil pump.. i'd start with the basic tune-up and go from there. How do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
when oil is burning from the engine it will be a shade of blue coming from the exhaust when antifreeze burns from the engine it is White smokeHow do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
white smoke, isnt that carbon build up? burning to rich/lean?

well i think if it was a bad gasket install it would be leaking a lot,

you will know when your turbo is bad when its not spooling up correctly or at all.. leaks meaning or needs to be rebults

a lot of factors...How do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
All ricers will eventually fail over time due to the stress on the engine from trying to race every car on the road. How do u know when ur turbo is messed up?
if the smoke is whitish, then you're buring antifreeze which means they installed the headgasket incorrectly. if the smoke is bluish, that means you're buring oil. I would take the coupler off the intake side of the turbo to see if there's any oil on it. If so, then it's a bad seal.

How much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?

I am looking for a car and I keep seeing adds that say :blown head gasket. I have a descent ability to work on cars myself, but now too good with terminology. When they say blown head gasket, is it just a new gasket that needs changed or what? how much would that cost? Looking at a 92 toyota 4 runner for 500.How much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?
If you are asking this question then you are not even close to being able to tackle this one yourself.

The %26quot;blown head gasket%26quot; can mean a lot of things but it usually means your engine is fried or damaged. Chances are good that you might need to do a lot more than replace the gasket. You often are looking at a total engine replacement.

... and don't bother with a Toyota 4Runner with this problem. The engine is toast. How much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?
Tony is correct. If you are asking this question, it would be unwise to try to tackle the job without a LOT of assistance. This is not a %26quot;minor%26quot; job on any vehicle. How much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?
If you just do a %26quot;slip and slide%26quot;, basically just replace the gasket. It will most likely do the same thing down the road. The correct solultion is to have the block and head checked for warpage (very common on aluminum heads). If either one are warped, then they need to be machined and trued. Not sure what the cost would be, check with your dealships for a reputable local machineist and have him check out the head and block and write up an estimate. How much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?
it shouldn't cost that much i got mine for an 89 civic from autozone for 30 and fixed the rest myself but for labor they might charge u an arm and a legHow much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?
OK, first of all, is it a 4 of 6 cyl.? and dont believe it when they say the engine is toast. the 4 cyl that came in that truck is one of the best engines ever to be manufactured. but i cant lie, the head gasket job is no joke. there are timing issues that need to be understood, and the head and block need to be checked for warppage. other than that, all it takes is understanding of nuts and bolts and tourque sequences. $30-50 from your local parts disributor. How much would it cost to fix blown head gasket?
do not buy fixer uppers unless your a pro. again dont buy fixer uppers unless your a pro, just trust me on that.

Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?

Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94.?

I filled coolant reservisor upto max mark and also poured coolant into radiator. but after 3 - 4 days there was no coolant. I again put some coolant and it lost again. My car's temp gauage showing overheating. Today I observed white smoke in and some leakage under hood. What might be problem?

One day, I checked with a mechanic and he indentified that their is lekage in radiator. So would like to know how much charge for repair a radiator. Which is best option, replace with new one or repair old one. I am new in auto so please reply as i am facing problem of over heating of my car.

After some days I checked with HONDA dealer. They did dignose test for the cost of 86$ and found problem in head gasket and repair cost will be 900$. So 900$ is really required to to pay for fixing this problem or it can be less. Or is there any alternative to head gasket. Or if I will not change, what will happend ?Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
First Of All... I dont know why you fools always take your cars to the dealer, especially a honda. Anyhow... Depends where the leek is. If its on the bottom, its possible you can repair it, but if its leeking from the top by the radiator cap, then you need to replace the radiator. Its really easy to install, just buy it at Pep Boys, Kragen, or Auto Zone and install it yourself. If thats too hard for you then just open the yellow pages and start calling all radiotor shops and find the price best for you. No Point taking it to the dealer and pay your life savings. Good LuckLoosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
If you want to keep the car, get it fixed ASAP. If the head gasket is the main leak, you should go to an independent garage for another repair cost estimate. The labor costs from a dealer are the most expensive way to repairs. If the antifreeze coolant has mixed with the oil in the crankcase, you would be wise to get this problem corrected in the next couple of days before serious damage is done to the bearings and cylinder walls. Or you could try to trade the car for something else, like a BMW, MBz, or Toyota.Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
how much for it?Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
would be cheaper to buy a parts car with a good engine and have the complete engines swapped.Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
uh first off check the oil, if it is a light brown it has water in it so you would have a blown head gasket, if it is the color of oil change the thermostat and check the hoses. Make sure the hoses are tight. Go to auto zone and ask someone they usually will help without charge and get a Haynes book for your car and this will help u with this car. If you do not fix the problem u will pretty much have to buy a new carLoosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
Your car is 13 years old. Whether you bought it new or old you must know something about the history of the age of the various components. Some ot the suggestions in the various inputs are good . You need to examine and inspect all the hose connections, any visible signs of deterioration on the radiator, corrosion on fins, heated or blown out fins, radiator cap seal, signs of water in the engine oil - brownish colour check - if its been there for a while, any visible signe of heated engine gasket. Engine oil level and colour.

When you get an estimate get a detailed parts and labour report and ask what they are going to do. Go to a reliable car garage rather than a dealer. They could do a pressure test to determine where the leak is unless it's a gross leak and its leaking all over the place.

Like a doctor, the more clearly you describe the symptoms, when you first noticed any signs of trouble, the more clearly an honest garage dealer could identify the problem and a possible solution at a reasonable cost. If you lie you will pay the price.Loosing coolant of my Honda Civic 94, head gasket problem and car temp gauge is showing overheating.?
It's terminal. You're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs. Pay someone $100 to haul the piece of junk away.

Got my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?

would i have to get it checked out and written down by another garage? to verify that the problems have been caused by oil overfill?

otherwise i doubt i would have a case.Got my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
Head gasket failure is usually caused by the engine overheating, or being run with a low coolant level. It is very doubtful that the oil change had anything to do with the head gasket. I have never know of a head gasket failure caused by too much oil in the engine.

I think what happened was a pure coincidence. You had the oil changed and then the Head gasket failed. The two are not related. It just happened at close to the same time. If you went to the ATM and withdrew $100, and as soon as you got the money, your girlfriend called you to tell you she was breaking up with you, could you blame the bank withdrawal?

It is the same thing here. it is just a matter of coincidental timing.

SorryGot my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
Can't say that I've ever heard of overfilling the oil causing a blown head gasket. Are you sure that is what caused it?

The garage that changed the oil, should have drained some out if it was overfilled. If the oil level was only a little overfilled, it shouldn't have made any difference.

Good luck to you, it will be interesting to hear the outcome on this one.Got my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
Don't sue them! Everyone is so sue-happy. Just demand for them to pay for the damages to your car---WITHOUT going to court---and if they don't, THEN go to court. Try resolving it first.Got my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
You would have to get it checked out by another garage and written down.

    You have a problem though.

Before a head gasket would blow because of too much oil it would blow every oil seal in the engine. If they are not blown....you have no case. Sorry.Got my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
If your oil was overfull it would get burnt off and you would have a lot of blue smoke out the tailpipe. If they well and truely overfilled it your engine would not turn over because you would get what is called a hydraulic lock because as the pistons tried to rotate they couldn't because they would be trying to compress the oil which is impossible to compress and the head gasket is above where any of this would happen.

I cannot see that there would be any link between your head gasket blowing and the oil change. The normal reason for a head gasket to blow is due to not using corrosion inhibitor and the water without inhibitor in the radiator rusting the head gasket away or corroding the engine block.

From my point of view it is a co-incidence and what many mechanics dis-like because of how they have to try to explain to the customerGot my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
If the cars a Vauxhall then it's nearly every other day on them damn things and nothing to do with over fill!!

I religiously always check my oil level after a service!

I blew an engine after an M.O.T. once! there was a hairline fracture on a steel pipe and i lost the water!!

I too felt it was the garage at fault? but how do you prove it?

and yep there is the coincidental occurrence of the fault to take into consideration.Got my oil changed and i think they overfilled it, as a result i blew a head gasket, how do i sue them?
garacaiu is correct...a head gasket blows because of excessive heat in an engine, ie: low or no radiator fluid causing the engine 2 operate at temps above 250 for a period of time or the thermostat stuck or water pump failed causing the same problem.

overfilling of oil would build pressure within the crankcase thus forcing the oil out any orafice availiable, ie: rear main seal, valve seals, timing cover gasket, dampner seal, even the dipstick tube, etc.

if the vehicle is new enuf and has a 'puter a technician can download all info and find out the hottest temp the engine was.

    Changed timing belt....now 2 weeks later...head gasket blew..help!!?

My automatic 2003 Dodge SX 2.0 has reached 60,000 miles 2 weeks ago, so I went to change the timing belt, the water pump, and did a seasonal check up and they told me everything was fine. It cost me around $550 for all of it.

Between then and now (2 weeks later), I drove the car like 4-5 times. Yesterday when I was driving, something weird happened to the rpm. Then some smoke came from the front of my car. I drove 5 more min to park it, then after I parked I saw a whole trail of liquid following my car. This morning when I woke up, there is a big puddle of liquid under my car.

I towed it to the same mechanic who fixed the timing belt, and he told me the thermostat wasn't working properly and engine cooling wasn't going in through as it should, then it overheated and the head gasket blew, and all the liquid that was on the floor was engine cooling liquid. Yesterday it was saturday and he couldnt give me a price to fix it cuz all the shop to order pieces were closed. I asked if this had anything to do with the timing belt being changed, and he told me no. I will figure out Monday how much it will cost.

Do you know if this couldve happened when they were changing the timing belt and they screwed up something?? I really feel so. And how much would it cost?

    Thanks!!Changed timing belt....now 2 weeks later...head gasket blew..help!!?
First, if you don't trust your mechanic, find a new one.

Second, it probably isn't related to your timing belt. It's just bad luck.Changed timing belt....now 2 weeks later...head gasket blew..help!!?
As a mechanic the only thing i can say is, the mechanic would have had to take the thermostat out to see if it was stuck in order to tell you that. But that would have resulted in your Temperature gauge to take off to 260 degrees or the coolant light on the dash would have come on signalling the driver that his car is overheated. If this happened to you while you were driving it then that could have caused the head gasket failure. Cars overheat from cooling fans not working as well as thermostat problems and low coolant or waterpump and radiator problems. If this was not the case you may be a victim of coincidence with no other way to prove otherwise. Cost of repair? 700 to 1000 bucks. This whole scenario really sucks, too many %26quot;gray%26quot; areas.Changed timing belt....now 2 weeks later...head gasket blew..help!!?
wll it ws possible it might had something to do with timing belt much not much more likely you didnt see the sign it was running hot and you didnt pull over and stop and drove to far with it hot costing more money thermostat cost like 12 buck head gasket might be another 500 car care priceless

Is your engine a Vortec 4.3L

It could be a lot of things.....

If you have oil in your antifreeze and antifreeze in your oil, it is your head gasket.

    If not,

Start with the basics, Replace the sparkplugs, cap and rotor, replace your airfilter and pcv valve, if you haven't already done so replace your O2 sensor. Put a code reader on the engine and see if you get any error codes, this may help you track it down. You may have an electrical short that is happening when the engine gets warm enough.

First off, if you need a head gasket here is what to look for, Over heating! Water In The oil, oil will turn white when hot water is mixed with it, or just the reverse oil in the water, or both, water running out between head %26amp; block,

steam comming from ehx tail pipe when motor is fully warmed up or white smoke, wight smoke with a blue cast is oil smoke, some antfrezz have a type of oil ethelinGlycol oil base, so in this case it will a distinktive anifrezz smell to it.if water is in the cyl, that cyl will be water fouled in most cases, run ruff. the only true test is to removed spark plugs and use a compression gage to check each cylender, hold gage in place and have someone turn motor over, it`s easy to do and you can find a gage at auto stores for about $35, less than taking it to a repair shop. good luck

Well you're %26quot;In a Pickle%26quot;, Water Pump is Driven by the Timing Belt under the Timing belt Cover. Also sounds like you have a Bad Radiator cap (Bubbles in Overflow Tank) and sucking air at One or both Radiator Hoses.

they could be worn. or wrong oil been usedWhy does my 2000 fiat brava 1.2 sx petrol burn oil had head gasket done and timing belt changed 65k miles?
You say white smoke is coming out of the exhaust?? If your engine was burning oil, it would be emitting blue smoke.

White smoke tends to mean water is entering the exhaust system.

If it is burning oil, it could be from, as already mentioned, the piston rings. Or it could be the valve stem oil seals...which requires quite a lot of labour. Why does my 2000 fiat brava 1.2 sx petrol burn oil had head gasket done and timing belt changed 65k miles?
White smoke is normal until the engine warms up.

If it`s burning oil,you should see blue smoke from the exhaust.

If you get blue smoke when you start up first thing in the morning,or pulling away from lights after a wait,it`s most likely the valve stem oil seals

    Otherwise it`s the piston rings.

If there is no smoke, check for leaks.

It`s difficult to give a price, some car`s valve stem oil seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head, but most not.

If it`s the rings, the head and sump will have to come off,and maybe the engine will have to be removed to remove the sump.

I changed the head gasket and now I need to set the cams in the right way. If you know how to do that please tell me how to do that and what do the little marks on the gears mean?2003 polaris predator 500 cams?
    This should answer your question

    1. Remove ignition timing inspection plug from recoil

housing. To position crankshaft at Top Dead Center

    (TDC) on the compression stroke.

    2. Rotate engine slowly in the direction of rotation

watching intake valves open and start to close.

    3. Continue to rotate engine slowly, watching for the

cam shaft sprocket marks and the %26quot;T%26quot; mark in the

    timing inspection hole.

    4. Align the %26quot;T%26quot; (TDC) mark on flywheel with the

indent in the inspection hole and the cam

sprockets marks (facing upward) aligned with the

    dots at the 12 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.

    NOTE:

The cam lobes should be laying flat and

the valves have clearance at thispoint.

Place the thrust washer on to the crankshaft with

the chamfered side in ward. Install the crankshaft

cam sprocket onto the shaft. Note the double

spline for ease of installation. The alignment mark

    should face outward.

Position the chain for correct timing by aligning the bottom cam timing

mark with the brass colored bottom chain link.

Keep tension on the chain so as to not lose chain

alignment at the crankshaft sprocket during cam

    installation.

    5. Next, install the intake cam, positioning the upper

cam chain for correct timing by aligning the

remaining brass colored chain link with the 12

    o'clockdotonthecamsprocket. Timing is in phase

when all three brass colored cam chain links align

with all three sprocket timing marks and the

secondary cam gear marks are at approximately

the 9 o'clock position, with the exhaust cam timing

    mark slightly advanced.

NOTE: Failure to align marks in this fashion will

cause valve---to---piston interference, resulting in engine damage

ive just had my head gasket changed on my ford escort (2000) twice!!! and it keeps blowing hoses im using 3 liter of coolant and the rest water, (under the car discounts instructions there is no crack on the head and the water pump seems to be working! but yet sizzle sizzle drip drip Help!! also how do i do a pressure check and what do i buy to do this??

thanks bonny SPressure build up in my cooling system?
    where is it dripping from?

it could be your pump or thermostat.

when the car is cold, open the radiator cab, and fill it. start the car up, without he cab, and let it warm up. withen 5 minutes or so, you should see the water starts to circulate in the radiator, if it doesn't, you have a problem.

you can then take out the thermostat, and start the car again, if the engine is still warm, and you took out the thermostat, you should be able to see the water circulating, if not, the pump is bad, if water is circulating, then just replace the thermostat. they are about $10.Pressure build up in my cooling system?
To do a pressure test you need a pressure test gauge, which would be expensive for a one off.

To have the head gasket done twice is a problem and costly.

Have you had it back to the place that done the job in the first place or did you do this yourself ?

i would have a look at the thermostat to see what is going on with that.

Is the water going around in the radiator.

when you run it feel the bottom hose see if is hot if it is not then there is something restricting the water.

Also just because the head is not cracked doesn't the block isn't.

Most important did you do the job yourself ?Pressure build up in my cooling system?
It sounds like a clog in your radiator. This would cause the hose to blow off. It sometimes lets coolant through but if it isn't letting enough then it will pop the hose from too much pressure. Could be from rust or garbage in the radiator.

How can you tell if your head gasket on a vehicle are blown?

On my BMV. It's stalling and rattles. At the same time. The water level was low and the revolutions were low. The reservoir broke and I changed it. Scenerio, wake up going to work, turn car on,no problem, stop by the Vons/711 about 1 mile(dosent matter how long but i notice after i start it the 1st time),then try to turn it on,wont do it on the first time nor the second unless i press the gas right after i turn the ignition switch. Just got a head gasket change, valve job. What can be the problem? also i feel it sluggish from 1st gera to 2nd,but all the rest feel ok.Never had problem until after job done. If I had that type of work done to my car %26amp; it was going OK before. I would take the car back to the person who did it %26amp; ask them to check it out. They should be able to shed some light on the problem. They may have to keep it overnight to see what you are talking about. That is my suggestion to you.

I've come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?

I poste about 2 hours ago about my 92' Jeep Cherokee Laredo and how it has oil in the coolant. After the 6 great answers I got, I've come to terms that it's probably a head gasket. Along with the head gasket, I'll need to flush out the oil out of the coolant too. I'm trying to find out how much is too much as opposed to how much cause I know its probably different everywhere. I would just sell it as is and get a dependable sedan, but it just can't happen. I need a few other things done (oil change, cv joints, etc.) but I want to get the important **** done. It's a straight 6 engine, so i believe it's only got 1 gasket.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
There is a reason the gasket failed, and it should be fixed also. Plan on getting the head milled to correct the warp. Might as well just give it a valve job.

You might just want to get a complete engine from a salvage yard. Get them to check the compression first. This would prove faster and maybe give you fewer surprises. You might find lower prices then those at this site:

    http://www.car-part.com/

But it will give you an idea of the cost.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
u r looking at about1,200 to 1,500 dollarsI%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
The straight (inline) six cylinder from that model is pretty straightforward. Not a great deal of stuff to remove to get to that cylinder head. If you have not suffered engine damage due to the coolant in the oil, I'd think $300 might cover that job.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
If you are fixing only the head gasket...and provided the head is in good shape...you are probably looking at between $300 and $600 depending on the garage you take it to. they all charge different labor rates so that will be the factor you are looking at.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
you might have someone qualified to check if the head or block/cylinders/etc. are not cracked first-you might be wasting money altogether for a non -repairable motor

Ok I want to sell my car as it's to small for myself and family.

    It's a T reg 99 vauxhall astra 1.4

16v ls 5dr green. has m.o.t untill november and tax untill

    April 09.

I'v only owned this car for just under a year and have just spent

out to have the head gasket changed timing belt oil change and so

fourth. Also it's had a new wiper motor.

    It's done 124493 total miles.

I've done no damage to it at all there is the scuff marks you'd get

with a car this age also theres a small dent in the rear bumper and a

crack on the rear light culster.

How much would it be worth to sell private or to part ex?

Only answer if your from the u.k and really know what your talking about.

How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?

    1998 Cadillac Catera V6

Im thinking about buying a 1998 Cadillac Catera. It has 160,000 miles on it. The timing chain, and head gasket was changed at 155,000 miles. I just want to know how reliable these engines are? Also the price is 2300 dollars.

Good or BadHow long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
I'd say thats a pretty good price if the car is in good condition. I would highly reccommend having the car checked out by a mechanic before buying. The reason for this is with all the cadillac's i've ever experienced, the engine runs forever, but other things (shocks, alternators, belts, etc...) tend to go bad at high mileage, just like any other car but a cadillac usually costs quite a bit more to repair. How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
over priced in my opinion. do the timing chain again on it just to make sure it was done right. no, kidding.....

they're pretty nice cars, if maintained. looks to me like this thing has had some major work done to it. do you know why the head gaskets were replaced, and where it was done at? do you know if there is any other oil leaks or coolant leaks? all very important questions before you make this rather large purchase. what do you currently drive? do you need a car this fancy, or could you get by with something with a little better gas mileage? How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
Cadillacs seem to last forever, they make a reliable engine, keep the oil changed with the proper grade at the proper intervals and my bet is you will get at leat 225,000 miles or better on that engine. How long does a 1998 Cadillac Catera engine last for?
Sure the engines are ok on those cars but its everything else that breaks around it. Those cars are not built very well at all. Its a good price but even minor repairs cost a ton on cateras

    White smoke coolant loss?

I am tearing down my engine to change the head gasket. Upon removing the timing chain cover i was wondering if water could be leaking past the gasket on it. If so it could be going into the oil pann and thats is how it is getting into the cylinder. How can I tell if it is?White smoke coolant loss?
don r has it right but be sure to clean any dirt/carbon by vacuuming the space where piston rides the cylinder walls. That dirt can tear up rings quick.White smoke coolant loss?
I would think that you might have a crack in the engine block or heads .I don't know how many miles you got on the engine but it would just be easier to get a rebuilt engine and put in.This way you have a good engine for another so many miles along with a warranty. But if you do go that way get a long block it comes with the head or heads. The engine block would have to be magnaflexed to find a crack either in the heads or engine block. You can get a better deal going with a new engine or rebuilt type.hgm20002000@yahoo.comWhite smoke coolant loss?
You are going to change the oil after you put the engine back together. That's just what you do. Any adulterants will go away with the old oil. Timing chains use the same oil as the rest of the engine. Coolant can escape wherever a bad head gasket is leaking and you will see where that is when you take off the head. Get some sleep. Fix it tomorrow.

Have the head magnafluxed or alumifluxed (if aluminum) to make sure it has no cracks. Have it checked to make sure it isn't warped. You're doing too much work to leave any of this to chance. Wire brush the combustion chambers and piston crowns to clear out carbon.White smoke coolant loss?
I actually had the exact same problem with a 1994 Ford Escort. One day it started blowing out lots of white smoke. I took off the valve cover to see what the oil looked like and the whole inner side of the valve cover was covered with a white and oily slimy mixture. It was probably because I actually had a blown head gasket...because a few months later the engine overheated and messed up the sleeve bearings in the block. All because ALL of the radiator fluid had either evaporated or gotten into the oil.

When a head gasket is bad will it damage the engine internals?

I'm looking at buying a 94 Chrysler LHS real cheap because it has a blown head gasket and is leaking coolant into the oil. needs tires and inspection, It runs great though and is in mint condition no rust or anything. My question is with the headgasket being blown would that damage any of the internals in the motor i can get a head gasket kit for 150 and change it myself,Just wondered how big of risk im taking at putting money in it if it could blow up or something be wrong inside the engine from it being bad?

What causes a head gasket to blow or leak? on a test drive it ran great picked up right away easily hit 65mph at barely even half throttle no miss or anything just slight coolant showing up in the valve covers but not in the oil. IS THIS WORTH THE INVESTMENT AND TIME OR SHOULD I FORGET IT UNLESS I PLAN TO REDO THE WHOLE MOTOR ? Also i seen a 3 step bar's leaks professional kit that is supposed to solve the headgasket problem has a few good reviews people said they used it and it worked can it be fixed with that or just better to put new gaskets and seals in it?When a head gasket is bad will it damage the engine internals?
If it still runs good then there is probably no damage to the bearings. I would recommend changing the head gaskets soon to prevent any damage to the bearings. Do not use the bar's leak - its not a permanent solution and actually could cause furter damage when it breaks down. I hope you are getting a good deal, good luck. When a head gasket is bad will it damage the engine internals?
Look on the dipstick and you'll see a sort of froth, which is the oil/water mix. As long as it's still sticking to the dipstick it's probably OK.

You'll have to take the cylinder head off and probably get it skimmed. This is quite good because it'll lift the compression ratio very slightly. Get a quote, though.

If the quote's too much you could try putting two head gaskets on.When a head gasket is bad will it damage the engine internals?
    a proper repair is recommended.

but have few quites done or just buy a car that is running without faults.

there is a reason the car is cheap as the reapirs are likely expensive.

also there is a saying covering this

dont throw good money after bad money. When a head gasket is bad will it damage the engine internals?
Thickness of the gasket plays very important role.Correct thickness determines the rated clearance volume.

Landing faces of block and head should be even and clean.

Gaskets to place with anti-seize gasket.

Tightening of the head bolts with specified torque is preferable.

Foundation bolts(The whole engine mounting) and resilience mounting to check for tightness.Check vibration at different speeds.

Coolant treatment,Radiator and cooling water circulating pump and fan performance to check.

Engine should be properly aligned with gear box and clutch and transmission arrangement.

If no proper cooling, recondition the radiator. When a head gasket is bad will it damage the engine internals?
The head gasket, if coolant is leaking, is blown from the water jacket, probably due to over heating. Until it is replaced, it won't get any better, and could go all the way through to leaking oil, losing oil presure, and eventually blowing up, causing severe damage, then you will have to rebuild. Taking chances the way it is risky, and once you do lose all your water, and compression, you will get to pull over to side of the road and get a tow, which I don't think anybody wants to do, ESPECIALLY when buying a new car.

You will HAVE to replace the gaskets, eventually. If you're prepared for that, by all means, do it. DON%26quot;T wait until it gets worse, because if you don't fix it, it will.

    Head Gasket?

    Hi,

I have a 1990 Ford Taurus 3.8 V6 with 157.000 miles. The car has a blown head gasket.

How do you determine which gasket is blown (front or rear)?

Since only one gasket is blown is it necessary to change both?

Since at least one head has to come off, should the same head go back on or, should a remanufactured head go back on?

When a head is sent to a shop to be checked what is it being checked for?

    Thank YouHead Gasket?
Why would you only replace ONE? You might as well replace BOTH if you are going to invest in the labour of the repair. Are you doing this repair yourself? If so, I STRONGLY recommend you buy the gaskets from your local FORD dealer. The part number is F5PZ-6051-BB. In this set, you get the UPDATED head gaskets for BOTH banks, the intake gaskets, all new cylinder head bolts, and valve cover gaskets for the '94 model year and newer style valve covers, so you'll have to purchase a set of valve cover gaskets separately. These gaskets are not expensive from the dealer. When the head(s) are sent out to the machine shop, they check for warpage of the gasket surfaces, and regrind the valves if requested. The common failure point on these, is usually the corner of cylinders 3 %26amp; 4. Hope this helps. And, I do not own my own shop LOL.Head Gasket?
he reason head the head gaskets %26quot;blow%26quot; is because the head got to hot and warped. The head, will most likely have to be replaced.

    Head Gasket?
do both and I think you need new head bolts on that one. There was an original problem either thermo, water pump ,radiatoror thermo-fan switch or somethingHead Gasket?
To determine which head gasket is blown you would do a compression test on each cylinder. It is not front or rear, but left and right bank, confusing since the engine is turned for front drive cars. As mentioned earlier the labor is the most expensive, so if you decide to do you might as well do both heads. they would check for valve wear as well as head warpage or cracks. since off then might as well have both heads rebuilt or exchange for rebuild from a competent , rebuilder or machine shop.Head Gasket?
You can buy them at walmart. They're about a dollar each.I'd buy 2. one for each side.(for sale signs)Head Gasket?
hey dutch, THAT WAS GREAT. YES!!!!!!

the other person is right.the old oil should be black and if you dont have water in your oil or theres no white smoke, then its safe to say its not a head gasket.change the thermostat again, you could have gotten a bad 1,and make sure the spring goes in the engine, and have the entire cooling system flushed.also did you check the fan and see if it works.

I just ordered the Haynes Manual and Head Gasket for my 2004 Highlander V4. How long will it take to replace?

My 2004 Highlander (4 cyl, 2wd) has a blown head gasket. I've read a lot about replacing them. I don't have much mechanical experience other than changing the exhaust system on my Harley and doing oil changes. How long will it take to replace?
Two Hours? An average mechanic takes 3-4 hours and that is if they have done it before. Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours to get everything off and put back together, and that is if the head is straight and not needing machine work. Take your time, do it right the first and hopefully last time. Good luck! I will say a mechanics prayer for you.I just ordered the Haynes Manual and Head Gasket for my 2004 Highlander V4. it depend how good are u in tools and do you have proper tools for the job some special tools are needed like torque wrench its very important to have this tool coz if cyl. head is not torque properly youll have leak or cause overheating 'im sure the book will tell u the proper tools. it will make your job easier.

Car shaking, what can the reason be?

the distributor and the cables are fine. how likely is it to have a bad distributor cap? the car check engine light is on. the reading gives a misfire on cylinder 1. what can i do to diagnose the problem? is this a good strategy?

    *change the distributor cap.

Take the no. 1 spark plug wire off and start the car. If shaking doesn't change, then replace wire with a known good one.

If that doesn't work, change no. 1 spark plug.

If that doesn't work, THEN change your distributor cap.

Three possible reasons immediately come to mind:

    1) TIRES - If they are low, uneven, unbalanced, or have some tread showing, you need to get that checked out right away, before you have a blowout. (Have you driven over a curb, in a junkyard, or on a construction site lately?)

    2) SHOCKS or STRUTS - These wear out over time. Have them checked and replaced if necessary.

    3) AXLE BOOTS or AXLE - Something you should have a mechanic check. (Do you hear anoise under the hood on one side only?)

  • How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?

I have a 1996 j-body sedan with a 2.2 engine. I have an external leak in my head gasket (leaking coolant), that apparently is not affecting compression and there is no coolant/oil mix. I narrowed down my choices to 2 main options for fixing it:

    1. Have it fixed locally for about $1000 including gasket kit, resurfacing, labour and tax.

    2. Have it fixed by a friend who is a Toyota tech for about $500 (parts/labour/tax). But I would need to drive the car for about 300 hwy kms, and would likely not be able to have the cylinder head resurfaced.

Any thoughts? Would also appreciate suggestions of other associated repairs/maintenance that I should consider (timing chain and tensioner were done 40,000km ago, coolant changed 10,000 km ago).

Thanks! How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
If the enging did not overheat, then it would not likely have warped the head, so you should be able get away with passing sandpaper on the mating surface of the head.

Save the $$How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
that sounds too expensive either way.

There is a reason for the gasket to leak so I would certainly get the the head resurfaced. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Have the head checked for cracks and warpage. The 2.2 will crack near the front head bolt on the drivers side. Get new bolts too, the old ones may break. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Both people want to take you to the cleaners. you don't need to surface the cylinder just to replace the head gasket, as long as there isn't a crack you won't have a problem. If you have any tools do it yourselfe. Check your coolant to see if it's still at the required temp. for your area. I would get a third quote on the job if you can't do it yourselfe! How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
No way to tell till the heads come off. They'll just lay a straight edge on it and see if it's warped too much. The 2 friend hopefully won't put it back on if it's warped. If it is, he'll be able to get it planed for a whole lot less than $500.How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Resurfacing the head will insure that you have a good matching surface to the block. This is to guarantee that the problem does not repeat it self. Sometimes the pressure will cause a slight grove in the head. This grove may not be noticeable. In the long run it is better to resurface the head. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Cylinder heads have a set tolerance for warpage. If it us under, your OK. If not, the gasket will leak again. I would have it resurfaced. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
If it's leaking towards the front right corner of engine (while looking at eng from front of car) then just get it replaced. That is a very common leak area on the 2.2 chevHow important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
Getting the cylinder head resurfaced is probably the best way to go. It will ensure that the gasket is seated correctly and compressed evenly. An even compression on the seal will help assure that it won't leak.

Another factor to take into consideration is that it might be a rough patch in the cylinder head surface that is causing the leak. In that case, you would HAVE to have it resurfaced, or else it will never seal.

One final thing to consider, is that if you take it to a shop, their work is usually guarunteed and warranteed. If something goes wrong and is the fault of the shop, they have to pay for it. If something goes wrong with your friend, you are SOL.

I would suggest taking it to a shop. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
take it to a mechanic localy that 2.2 engine has an aluminum cylinder head its very important to check the deck of the head and resurface if it needs it BUT U MUST CHECK IT. ALUMINUM IS PRONE TO WARP DESPITE BEING OVERHEATED OR NOT most mechanics especially backyard self taught no schooling mechanics dont know how to take an aluminum head off to help prevent warping spend the 1k ull get a warranty too. 1k is cheap compared to what i charge but i also check valves and spring pressure to because ur already there. How important is it to have your cylinder head resurfaced when replacing your head gasket?
you should always have it resurfaced

Engine not "Timed" right after Head Change, makes "Whirrr" Noise, how can i get ti Timed?

Ok the Guys put the Gaskets and all that on, new head is on, and they didnt have a Timing light. On old head, it would Crank and not start. This time, it just goes %26quot;Whiirrrr%26quot; Its not the battery, my Ford Escort sounded the same when a Timing Belt snapped.

So the new Head and all is on there, and now i need to get it Timed. The 1991 alais did NOT have a Timign Belt nor gear. They said Timing is done by the Pulleys, and with a special Timing light.

So, if i get ti towed to a shop, they can %26quot;Time%26quot; my Engine without taking it back apart? This is a new one to me..

(And yes, the cylinders were full of water they drained it all out. Oil and Antifreeze is now in and its not mixing, but it also didnt Crank it just goes %26quot;Whirrr%26quot; something is wrong, i suspect Timing.)

How do I know if my head gasket on my car need to be changed?

lack of heat. loss of coolant. excessive pressure in your cooling system. oil leak. there is a tester to check for exhaust gasses in the cooling system. There is a white residue around the exhaust flanges. excessive white smoke or steam coming out the exhaust. Some steam, especially at start up is normal. How do I know if my head gasket on my car need to be changed?
    1. If you see oil comming from where the head connects to the block. 2. Drain you oil. If it looks normal then its good, if it is a white milky color then you need to change your head gasket. How do I know if my head gasket on my car need to be changed?
One thing is if you're getting water in your oil. Look at the oil on your dipstick, if it has some very light brown stuff, and bubbles on it, that's water.

I am receiving a Infiniti J30 for my senior years of high school. The car looks really good, no accidents. I need to change the head gasket seal, the fuel injectors, and the starter and replace the air filter. Also I need to get the outside door handle fixed as it won't open the driver side door from the outside and the driver side window is completely off track, but the motor still works fine. How much could I expect for these repairs to cost me so I know how hard I need to work this summer?? :)Quote for repairs to a Infiniti J30?
The injectors are $194.70 each from Infiniti, there are six on the car.. The starter is $425.57. Head gasket $122.59Quote for repairs to a Infiniti J30?

I would expect to work hard considering you will also have to pay for gas too. I would hope 20 hrs a week would do it. Maybe $1000 or so depending on your area - labor prices vary by area.Quote for repairs to a Infiniti J30?
A proper quote would be from a mechanic who can take a look at it.

The mechanic will be able to tell the difference between a valve cover gasket and a head gasket.

Replace head gasket or new engine for KE70?

I have a Corolla ke70 that has a problem with the head gasket, and another with a blown head gasket. How much would it cost to replace the head gasket? and how mcuh would it cost to change the engine?Replace head gasket or new engine for KE70?
Costs to replace a head gasket, assuming the head is in good condition, not warped, and doesn't need a head job typically costs between $600-$1000. More if the heads need to be machined, if valves have been damaged and need to be replaced, etc.

A rebuilt engine typically costs around $2000, and a few hundred to install.

  • Is the intake manifold gasket something I can change myself on a 200 Saturn?

Hey all, my wife's 2000 Saturn SL SOHC has been throwing an engine code of P0507 which indicates a higher than normal idle that the PCM is unable to compensate for. After doing some research online it appears that these engines are prone to a leak in the intake manifold gasket. I'm headed out to get some carb cleaner to test for where the leak might be. If it is, in fact, the gasket, how easy is this to change on my own? It appears that it'll be about a $300 job at an auto shop. I'm pretty proficient with tools, but wanted to make sure I'm not getting in over my head. Thanks!!Is the intake manifold gasket something I can change myself on a 200 Saturn?
They can change the manifold gasket for $300? Sounds like a good deal to me. It is much to difficult for the do it yourselfer. If you over torque the bolts or under torque you will have leaks and major trouble. Who said it was the gasket? The internet or the mechanic? Is the intake manifold gasket something I can change myself on a 200 Saturn?
This answer sucks. the big issue would be the intake is on the firewall side of the engine, and it might be tough to access some of the bolts. Other than that, this is as basic as a repair can get. undo the bolts, remove old gasket, tighten bolts.

I agree with Beaugrand. $300 is cheap. I used to own a Mercedes. You couldn't do anything on that car for $300.Is the intake manifold gasket something I can change myself on a 200 Saturn?
It's not hard to change the gasket. Do it your selfIs the intake manifold gasket something I can change myself on a 200 Saturn?
If you're asking for car repair advice on the Internet, you probably shouldn't attempt to fix it yourself.

You may actually be able to replace the gasket, only to find out that wasn't the problem- you have to be certain you know the cause, otherwise you're just throwing expensive parts at the problem and hoping one of them fixes it- when it could be a faulty sensor connection, or a bad hose, or a corroded connector, or a cracked manifold.

When you hire a mechanic, you're paying for his knowledge and training and experience, not just the physical act of replacing parts. A good, competent, ethical mechanic can actually save you money, which is the point of having the car fixed, right?
